José Romero: Rising Star

That Tampa Bay offense can certainly be explosive when it gets going! They just seem to lack the consistency needed to do it week in week out.

Yep. That's a recurring theme which we hope can fix in the next season. The offense simply turns on and off at times, good thing the defense is always On.

Welcome back. So, last time we saw the Bucs sputter and go down in the NFC Divisional Round against the future NFC's representative in the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers. The AFC's representative are the Indianapolis Colts, their second straight SB appereance. Now, sadly Madden 08 doesn't let me see stats of games that my team was not a part of. That means that I won't be able to see the stats of the game, or be able to watch the SB and tell you what happened in it. So ... the best I can give you is that the game ended 28-13 in favor of the Colts, which means Tony Dungy's squad earned their second title in 2 years, and a Manning won the big game in the '07. I'm pretty sure both the Colts and 49ers will be legit contenders for their conferences come next year. Also, no Pro Bowl score here since a) Not a game Jose Romero was in and b) While the Pro Bowl is far more fun in Madden than in real life, it's still the least entertaining game of the season.

Now comes the 2008 Off-Season. Here are a couple of rules for this:
a) This being a QB Journal, I'll be putting an extra focus on the QB moves of the team. Considering, this year, the Bucs have 5 (FIVE!!) QBs on the roster, we should see some movement. The biggest question is who. My analysis will be next.
b) I'll be using real life draft classes, as oppossed to Madden Generated classes. So expect to see some well known guys around, Real Life busts tunring into superstars and viceversa.
c) I'll review each draft decision made by the team (Albeit I'll just show the game OVR).

First, we'll start with an important retirement for the Bucs. QB Jeff Garcia decided to retire after the season. His final career stats are: 22,831 Passing Yards, 154 TDs to 86 INTs, 2,059 completions in 3,385 attempts fopr a completion percentage of 60.8%. For the Bucs, this means trouble. Their QB situation right now looks like this:
* Jose Romero (Our guy), 3rd rounder in the final year of his rookie contract.
* Luke McCown, who has looked like a perennial backup and is on the final year of his contract.
* Chris Simms, who has looked up and down and is looking for a new contract.
* Bruce Gradkowski, who hasn't played at all and is on the final year of his rookie contract.
Some additional notes: Chris Simms is the guy with the most experience of the bunch (70 AWR). Romero is the most atletic of the bunch (85 SPD, 81 AGI, 76 ACC), as well as the one with the best arm when it comes to getting zip on the ball (94 THP) although his ball placement is still up and down (His 80 THA is the lowest in the QB list). Bruce Gradkowski has the most accurate arm, but the weakest as well (83 THP, 87 THA). Luke McCown is kind of the guy in the middle (87 THP, 82 THA). And if it counts, Chris Simms has the worst injury history of the group (69 INJ) while Jose Romero has the best (90 INJ). Finally, it could be minor but, out of all QBs under contract for the Bucs, Romero has the biggest deal (The total of his rookie contract is $2.28M)
There are other positions to be worried for the Bucs (There are 4 CBs on the roster, right now none of them is under contract. And the TE position is "meh" at best.), but how the QB situation develops could be interesting to watch.

After the "Retirement" Week passed, teams started to look at their roster and looked to make changes to their teams to improve them for the next season. The first step is making sure they have cap room to do anything at all, so it's time for some cap casualties.

Here are some developments:
* Chris Simms, QB. He was allowed to walk as a Free Agent. That means the team is in the hands of either Jose Romero, Luke McCown or QB the Bucs could drraft.
* Mike Alslott, FB. He was resigned, so the Bucs will keep the services of the best running FB in the league.
* The Cornerback situation. Ronde Barber, QB Terror, was resigned but the team needs to find someone that can take the place of the old man. Phillip Buccanon and Brian Kelly were also resigned, so the Bucs have 3 CBs in the roster and will be looking for some more in the draft or Free Agency. Looking on the bright side, the Bucs have a shutdown corner and 2 borderline shutdowns on the roster.
* Edge Rusher. The Bucs don't have any Left EDGE on the roster, so they'll be looking for a few of them in the draft/FA.
* Pass Catchers. As mentioned before, the TE situation is just ok. The WR position isn't as bad, but it relies on the 35 year old Joey Galloway and the 32 year old Ike Hilliard to work. It wouldn't be out of the question for the Bucs to draft a WR or TE (We already have a pass catching RB).

And next is the NFL Draft. For this edition of the Draft, the Bucs decided to load up on offensive weapons. No, really. Look:
* 1st Round, 25th Pick. Earl Bennett, WR (79 OVR). Really solid for a rookie. Lateral mobility could be better, but he's reliable. He's also great at kick returns.
* 2nd Round, 25th Pick. John David Booty, QB (78 OVR). Has plenty of arm talent, both strength and ball placement.
* 3rd Round, 25th Pick. Jerome Simpson, WR (78 OVR). The main issue is catching the ball. He has more than enough speed to stretch the defense vertically and far enough lateral mobility to stretch it horizontally.
* 4th Round, 25th Pick. Steve Johnson, WR (77 OVR). A tad on the slow side, mobility is not the best and pass catching could be better.
* 5th Round, 25th Pick. Adrian Arrignton, WR. (76 OVR). Pass Catching and Route Running are a bit of an issue.
* 6th Round, 25th Pick. D.J. Parker, FS (75 OVR). Fast enough for a safety, with good enough ability to avoid and shed blocks. MAYBE could benefit as a Strong Safety.
* 7th Round, 25th Pick. Rodrick Johnson, LB (75 OVR). A pretty effective run stopper with adequate mobility. Could become much more than "just a 7th pick"

Yeah ... wasn't expecting so many WRs. Or a QB, but hey ... here we are. (Madden's Drafting AI man. I COULD have used MaddenAMP, but I'd rather leave the CPU draft players on it's own. I do have a plan to use MaddenAMP next season though, and only draft players the AMP scout utility recommends for the team). The Bucs rounded out their roster by signing a DE and a CB during the FA period. For now, the QB Depth Chart looks like this;
* Jose Romero
* John David Booty
* Luke McCown
* Bruce Gradkowski
The FO decided to make Romero the starting QB, and keep David Booty in the bench so that he can learn a bit about how the NFL defenses work. I want to note that John David Booty was given 3 year, $7.44M contract. It looks like the Bucs might be interested more in him that on Romero. Said in another way, this could be a "Show Me" year for Romero. If he does stay, he will have to prove he's superior to David Booty. If he doesn't, he needs to prove he is going to be a future star and become a franchise QB for years to come.

The NFL's season opening game is upon us. The very first game of the season has the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road facing the Atlanta Falcons. This is a memorable date for Jose Romero, since this is his first official NFL start (You can call his first played game back in '07 as start, since he played all offensive snaps minus 1). Last season, the Falcons swept the Bucs during the entirety of the regular season, but the Bucs got the last laugh by knocking Atlanta out of the playoffs. Which of these games will repeat?

The Falcons elected to defer, so the Buccaneers got the first possession. The drive started off well, nearly stalling at a point before a Romero scramble (Featuring a stiff arm) ...

... before the drive stopped in the red zone, and Matt Byrant missed the field goal.

The Falcons took the field and started their drive. QB Jake Delhomme was good enough on the drive, but it was mostly HB Jerious Norwood getting solid runs ...

... or Rookie HB Jonathan Stewart doing THIS ...

... that got them their first 7 points.

The Bucs offense took the field once again, and this drive went smoother than the last one. Featuring Romero to Galloway ...


... Romero deep to TE Jerramy Stevens ...

.. and the TD pass to Joey Galloway.


The Falcons nearly one upped that drive with these two plays ...


... bur fortunately, the Norwood run was stopped due to a holding call. By this point, the second quarter had started, the Bucs defense stopped the Falcons offense and they settled for a FG, 10-7 Falcons.

That did turn around, in a bizarre sequence. Down by the redzone, QB Jose Romero dropped to pass, saw everyone covered and scrambled to the endzone. He fell 2 yards short before being tackled and fumbling ...

... WR Ike Hillard, who was pretty close and got bowled over byt the whole tackle process somehow managed to get the ball mid bounce. The refs saw this and awarded a TD ...

... yeah, that isn't in the endzone. Whatever, better than having the ball go through the endzone.

With 5 minutes to go in the quarter, the Falcons took the field. Despite being set back by a sack, the Falcons managed to get the lead back against the Bucs soft zones ...

... and against their faulty deep coverages.


With 2 minutes to go, the Bucs had the ability to take a 21-17 lead, or tie the game with a FG. Assuming they get that far. They started to do so, but after WR Earl Bennett dropped a sure 1st Down ...

.. it was 3rd and 10. The Bucs converted anyway ...

... with yet another pass to Bennett. At midfield and with a minute to go, Romero decided to get a bit more aggressive with a shot downfield to TE Jerramy Stevens.


He somehow managed to fit the ball in an unexistant window. Stevens showboated his way to the endzone and was tackled a yard short. At the line of scrimmage for the next play, Romero decided that, no, they weren't throwing the ball ...

... he sneaked in for the TD. With just 20 seconds on the clock, the Falcons couldn't do nothing about that 21-17 lead. (It should be noted that after that sequence both Romero and Stevens were talking with Head Coach Gruden and Offensive Coordinator Muir, possibly about that play. Maybe they both improvised on that play.)

The second half opened with punts by both teams, be it because of drops ...

... or unblocked rushers ...

... forcing punts.

The Falcons got dangerously close to a big play, but Delhomme pushed the ball a bit too wide and WR Roddy White couldn't tap his feet in bounds. Hell of catch though.

Then Jose Romero and Joey Galloway one upped them on the next Bucs drive, as they did managed to connect on a deep ball.

This came to it's logical conclusion when Romero connected with FB Mike Alslott on a Wheel route for a TD ...

... BUT ...

... yeah, good one Matt Bryant.

The 3rd Quarter ended 27-17 Buccaneers.

With no time to waste, the Falcons needed to string a few drives together to have a chance to win the game. And it didn't help at all that Delhomme threw a pick six that pretty much ended the Falcons' chance of winning.

The Falcons still tried to claw back out of that hole, and initially they looked good but they would need onside kicks to make it, which ... well ...
... add to that a missed XP.

The Bucs managed to add a field goal by Matt Bryant. The Falcons were still doing their best to comeback, and it wasn't half bad ...

(Note: Could we please tackle. Please) ... and was ended with this Delhomme to WR Brian Finneran for a TD ...

... But, they still need the onside kick to wo-

... yeah. Not going to happen. Then HB Carnell Williams did this ...

... to get a first down, and the Bucs kneeled the clock for a bit, kicked a FG to make it 40-30, and then a strip sack of Jake Delhomme allowed Romero to just kneel out the clock.

With that performance, Jose Romero got a 74.99 GPR (The main blemish were his 2 fumbles, but other than that he had a great showing). He was also the Bucs' rushing leader. Jake Delhomme earned a GPR of 41.69 (Again, two of his fumbles were troublesome. He had an average performance otherwise).

That whole "Ball doesn't cross the plane, it's still a TD" was fun. It was funnier that Atlanta didn't even consider to challenge the call.

As for the press conference questions:
1) I feel honored that they let me take the reins of the team. The coaching staff apparently thinks I'm ready enough to be a starter, so I'll do my best out there.
2) The guys definitely have a lot of talent, and we have a lot of depth at receiver, lots of dynamic guys to shake up opposing secondaries. I definitely wouldn't like Joey (Galloway, WR) or Maurice (Stovall, WR) going down but I think we could handle that.

Man, I haven't played in this journal for a while. Anyway, to save time I'll use a posting system similar to my new Steelers Journal (I'm playing one game per day on that one, and I'm dealing with some MaddenAMP stats glitches). I'll be posting the biggest plays of a certain stretch of time (In this case, 4 weeks). As before, you can ask José questions, which he'll answer in upcoming posts. All right, let's roll.

Week 2, Lions at Bucs: It was a rough game for the defense that not even the Bucs offense could pull through, although they were inefficient in the 2nd half anyway, other than Romero's efforts to lead a 4QC/GWD that only produced a tying FG. WR Roy Williams carved the Bucs' D all day, to the tune of 10 receptions for 180 yards, including a back breaking 35 yarder in OT to set up the Lions game winning FG.

Week 4, Falcons at Bucs: The game started scary for the Bucs. José Romero got injured on a QB Sneak.

He returned on the very next drive, and that definitely didn't limit his running. While his accuracy was questionable, his efficiency was not. He completed 22 of 39 passes for 286 yards and a passing TD. On a day where "Cadillac" was ineffective, Romero was also the team's lead rusher, with 68 yards on 16 carries and a rushing TD. Two of those scrambles came when the Bucs needed it the most. Up by 8, the Falcons had all of their timeouts inside the 2 min warning. Despite this, Romero rushed for 2 first downs, essentially freezing the game.
