Week 14 update

The Blizzard didn't stumble again and are now 10-2. They barely edged the Kingfish and then routed the Ironmen.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Aguilas, Cougars and Quakers have just one win. If the season ended right now, the Blizzard's mystery picks would yield #2 and #4 (3-10 Wolves).

Individual stats have not been as impressive as the past few years. Nate Clarke should reach 80 passing touchdowns, and help James Logan and Blake Blair to both reach 2000 yards.

Anchorage's young defense is producing. Keith Glass is still reaching opposing quarterbacks, but still not generating turnovers. Ike Roberts is reaching quarterbacks less often, but he's intercepting/defending passes. Matt Westbrook, Raven Bender and Oliver Joyce are all very effective, and their ceiling is even higher.

On special teams, Lester Walker seems to have won the starting returnman spot for good. On offense, him and Daryl Rutledge have been battling for snaps.

Lester Walked stayed on his feet to score a punt return TD.

After a deflected pass intercepted by Marvin Thomas, another pass intended for James Logan was intercepted, this time by Derek Robinson.

On the final play of a tight game, the Anchorage defense denied K.C. Hilliard the tying touchdown.

Matt Westbrook forced Scott Knight to fumble, and it was returned to the endzone by Raven Bender.

In an almost-disastrous play, Lester Walker bumped into the referee, then was almost tackled in the endzone. But he stayed on his feet and had a clear path straight ahead.

Westbrook had a great game, also getting a 63-yard pick-six.

Jermaine Vincent got wide open for a touchdown against the Termites.

Devin Nalen has improved a lot since being thrusted into a starting role last year due to an injury. He is now a starter and recorded 2 endzone interceptions against Nate Clarke.

James Logan caught the pass and made it to the endzone.

I will do a proper update at the end of week 17, but I just had to share how close this season is. The parity atop the league is insane. So much so that only 3 teams have clinched a playoff berth with 2 games to play.

In the AFC, all divisions are tied and no one has officially clinched yet.

Season 124 recap

The Blizzard finished 13-3. However, the game they dropped was against the Kingfish, who later clinched the division when Brett Paris booted a 33-yard field goal in overtime of the last game of the season. That Portland victory over Great Plains on Monday Night football was not enough to kick the Bison out of their divisional lead over the Ironmen, who failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in a while.

QB Nate Clarke earned MVP honors with his 87 TD passes and over 7000 yards. His favorite targets James Logan and Blake Blair both reached 2000 yards, and 5 different players caught 10+ touchdowns. On the ground, Dwight Jones continues to get more responsibilities. He had his best season yet, but fumbled a little too often.

Tribe MLB Sheldon Radetsky earned DPOY honors with his 209 tackles, 1 sack, 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and 7 fumble recoveries. All 4 following players in the running were from Anchorage: Ike Roberts, Keith Glass, Matt Westbrook and Raven Bender.

Raven Bender won the DROY trophy with his ability in coverage and his skill to create turnovers in whichever way possible. Another young player has been taking more responsibilities, as third-year FS/CB Matt Westbrook led the team in tackles and interceptions.

Playoffs recap

The resilient Apocalypse clinched their division to host a wild card game against the Blizzard.

After Charles Jones opened the score with a 2-yard reception, veteran WR Glenn Washington turned a short pass into a 65-yard TD to tie the game.

Trailing by 2 touchdowns, the Apocalypse had a wild 3rd quarter that saw Chester Ferris record his second pick-six of the game, this time on 103 yards, and Toby Lloyd return a punt to the endzone.

Blake Blair gave Anchorage a new lead when he caught a 4-yard TD, then Lomas Homan returned an interception to the endzone to make it 52-35. Jared Thomas scored a touchdown to cut the gap in two, but it was too little too late.

The RailRiders opened with a Luke Franklin field goal and a 45-yard TD reception by Byron Koch.

The Blizzard took their first lead, thanks to special teams (106 kickoff return by Lester Walker) and defense (81-yard interception return by Matt Westbrook).

A turning point happened on Birmingham's next possession. They were settling for a field goal, but a defender ran into the kicker and the penalty set the ball at the 3-yard line. From there, Leeland Watson dove into the endzone.

Blake Blair scored on a 6-yard reception, but Marvin Jones connected with Rich Ambrose for a 57-yard TD.

The RailRiders took the 31-28 lead when Martin Nelson scored a 62-yard TD, but the Blizzard claimed it back with James Logan's 68-yard TD.

Birmingham found itself back on top with this 50-yard TD reception by Koch.

In the 4th quarter, Rod Sparks tied the game with a 36-yard field goal, but then Luke Franklin gave his team another lead with 2:36 to go. This would stand as the winning points.

To make it to the Super Bowl game, the Defenders dispatched the Vortices in the divisional round. Ryan Quinn rushed for 126 yards and 2 TDs. John Snow had 15 tackles, Brenden Jones had 3 sacks and Carlos Baldwin returned an interception to the house to help preserve the 30-17 win.

In the NFC championship, a Jayson Brooks field goal (his 3rd of the day) sent London to the big game. Mo Abraham threw for 360 yards and 4 TDs, while Ryan Quinn rushed for 144 yards but was kept out of the endzone.

Byron Koch opened the Super Bowl game with a 67-yard punt return. This 7-0 lead would stand until the 3rd quarter.

Jayson Brooks kicked 30- and 37-yard field goals, and Ryan Quinn scored from 9 and 3 yards away. Quinn finished with 151 yards and 2 TDs to be named game MVP.

Brooks had another field goal, while Luke Franklin had one in the 4th quarter. But it was too little too late. Final score: RailRiders 10, Defenders 22.

For the season (including the playoffs), Ryan Quinn amassed 3013 yards and 26 TDs.

The team also signed rookie OLB Jamaal Miller, who had been selected with the 218th pick but let go by his original team.

Bowens is a legitimate threat right off the gate. He is quick (SPD 99, ACC 85, AGI 95) and has good hands (CTH 81). He could even be the heir to icon James Logan, who just turned 31 and is starting his 8th season.

Rudd also has a shot at being a starter, depending on how the team uses veteran DE/LB Bennie Cote. Rudd has good quickness for a linebacker (SPD 87, ACC 88), and he has decent tackling technique (TAK 80).

Roberts might be a project player. He is a little small (6'3, 280) but he has decent quickness for a lineman (SPD 56), great strength (STR 98) and already a great technique (PBK 86, RBK 86).

Holland will be battling to be the primary backup to Oliver Joyce, and is also great on special teams (RBK 39). He is a little slower than other backups (SPD 91), but already is a great tackler (TAK 88).

Barnes has similar attributes (SPD 84, AWR 77) to current starter Tony Battle, and he will be trying to earn some playing time.

Sapp is tall (6'6, 313) and strong (STR 99), and already has decent blocking skills (PBK 81, RBK 81).

Ward is smart (AWR 80), but might need a little bit too much work (PBK 79, RBK 56).

Grandmont has speed (SPD 89) but lacks strength or acceleration. Not a great tackler either (TAK 68, AWR 65).

Clewett is a good special-teamer (RBK 48) but his speed (SPD 85) is a concern.

London has great physical attributes, but his run blocking skills (RBK 66) might be too hard to work with, especially on such a deep o-line.

Brown has some speed (SPD 86, ACC 85), and strength (STR 76), but needs to work on his game (AWR 62, TAK 72).

Gill is unlikely to get time on defense, but he has decent speed (SPD 81) and could help on special teams (RBK 38).

Miller has the speed the team likes (SPD 87, ACC 87), but will also need to work on his game (AWR 57, TAK 70).

QB Nate Clarke is chasing his own TD record of 115, and is throwing fewer interceptions than last year.

For the first time in decades and possibly ever, the three favorite targets are 3 WRs. James Logan is on pace for another 3000-yard season, while rookie Brenden Bowens is fitting in nicely. Lester Walker is used both wide and in the slot, and he is also the main returner, accounting for 23 TDs so far.

CB Raven Bender and FS Matt Westbrook are proving to make a great young DB duo who can create turnovers. LB Ike Roberts is also having a great season with 25 sacks, 3 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles. Keith Glass and rookie Craig Rudd are also great on the pass rush.
