#4 12-4 St. Louis Rams at #1 16-0 Minnesota Vikings



The offense got the ball in great field position after a Cutler interception, and a perfectly executed screen to Wallace did the trick. And let me tell you, getting a screen to work in Madden 08 is no easy feat.




Diggs had a huge game, and caught a TD in the 1st quarter to make it a 14-0 game.




Rams HB Anthony Dixon had a decent day on the ground, forcing many missed tackles like this one where... our safeties appear to be going after a phantom of some sort.




The Rams strike back with a perfectly blocked FB run and make it 14-7.




Diggs makes a 24 yard catch in front of Chris Owens, the Rams' slot CB. Owens was roasted several times today.




Smith sees Greg Olsen wide open in the endzone and the Vikings take a 21-7 by halftime.




Despite only catching 1 TD on the entire season, Greg Olsen catches a second on the day. Fantasy owners of Olsen are likely steaming right now.




Rookie Derek Rivers sacks and injures Jay Cutler, and both lay dazed on the turf for a bit. Cutler only ended up missing a few plays.




CB Dee Milliner picks a Cutler pass thrown straight into double coverage by backup QB Chad Henne. The Vikings are running way with this one, yet again.




The Vikings intercept a third pass, and Rodgers-Cromartie got some serious air when making the jump.




Cutler finds a wide open Jeremy Maclin and scores a garbage time TD.




The Vikings trounce the Rams, but a couple garbage time TDs by the Rams skewed things a bit. On to the... ooh, actually let's not spoil who our Champsionship opponent is.

Game Summary

There's not a whole lot to cover here - the Rams played as the CPU teams usually do, though they were able to manage a few effective drives with a decent running game. Anthony Dixon ran for over 1500 yards this year, but thankfully they didn't hand him the ball quite enough. Dixon's ability to break tackles got the Vikings to miss 6 tackles when coming after him. Cutler had some success throwing to his two primary receivers, but that was about it. 1000 yard TE Jarred Alexander was limited to very little today.

Trey Smith and the offense decimated the Rams' defense, though it was disappointing to see the running game struggle to do much. Howard hasn't quite been the same since he returned from his injury. Our O-line was perfect in the passing game, allowing Smith to have as much time he needed for his throws. Diggs and Wallace were wide open at times, and Smith took full advantage of this. The Rams were missing their top pass rusher, Jadaveon Clowney, and their D-line simply put no pressure on Smith.


One note - CB Jonathan Banks was injured and is doubtful to play against the Eagles next week. Perrish Cox will have to step up and play slot CB.


Eagles Update

Eagles at Panthers

Eagles trailed the whole game, going down 14-0 in the 1st quarter. Eagles offense couldn't move the ball well but managed 10 points by halftime. The Eagles were able to stay in the game thanks to an injury to Alex Smith, making Matthew Stafford come out and totally embarrass himself against his former team. Stafford went 1/9 with 6 sacks and 6 dropped interceptions by Eagle defenders! Even then, Philly couldn't score until late in the 4th quarter, with 2:12, tying the game at 17. The Panthers moved the ball to the 50, but then WR Curtis Samuel fumbled the ball away. The Eagles recovered in great field position and kicked the winning FG - the CPU was so close to beating me! If only Alex Smith didn't get injured and their kicker missed 2 FGs, they likely would have won the game.

#2 15-1 Philadelphia Eagles at #1 16-0 Minnesota Vikings

I ran with this round with some special rules - but for now, the plan was to play as the Eagles in the 1st half as long as they didn't get too big a lead, and the Vikings would get the 2nd half unless we took a big lead. If the game begun to get out of hand, I would switch teams. Here's how the game went:




Even with me in control of the Eagles, the Vikings torched the Philadelphia defense relentlessly. Here HB Jordan Howard beats Matt Alexander deep, and it looks like he thought the play was over... how embarrassing.




My 1st round rookie Smith-Schuster is done with a serious injury... ouch! Most of the year I dealt with few injuries, but we lost a few guys today.




TE Orson Charles scores the opening TD, and the CPU takes control as the Vikings.

On the Eagles' first drive, HB Tre Mason fumbled the ball away. How devastating!




I can't stop the CPU. The Vikings score again and make it 14-0.




TE Jimmy Graham gets loose and breaks about 3 tackles on his way downfield. The Eagles got the ball down to the Vikings' 10 yard line and...




On 4th and 5, the CPU sacked me! DT Robert Nkemdiche made the biggest play of his career with a humongous stupid.




I quickly got the Vikings to punt, and the Eagles scored their first time with 2:08 left. 3rd string HB Lamar Miller is now the starter at HB.




I had no answers for Mike Wallace in the 1st half - the CPU was smart enough to now to keep throwing the ball his way.

The Vikings, 100% CPU controlled, went into halftime with a 17-7 lead, and now I get to control the Vikes. This should be game over for the Eagles, though I will get to control them again later in the game.




After the CPU went for it and failed on 4th and 10, I took the Vikings offense down for our third TD.




And then William Moore picks off Matt Ryan and takes the ball to the endzone, taking a 31-7 lead!! This also prolongs the amount I get to play the Vikings!



DE Hilee Taylor crushes Matt Ryan in the endzone, but this counts as an incomplete pass.

I retook control of the Eagles trailing 31-10 with 1:30 left in the 3rd quarter. This will be difficult to bring back!




I was able to bring the Eagles down on a 99 yard drive, finishing with a big play to reserve WR Demarcus Robinson. Vikings lead 31-17.




After getting the Vikings to go 3-and-out, I started to get into a rhythm with the Eagles offense. Here's a play where T. Y. Hilton got open and I made sure to pick on SS T. J. McDonald.

The CPU Vikings defense was able to sack me on 3rd & 10, leading to a long 4th & 19, so I opted to punt. I was able to get the ball back with 5:50 remaining, still down 14 points.




Matt Ryan threw a deep ball into double coverage and WR Demarcus Robinson came up with it! With plenty of time (4:30) left, the Eagles have already made it a 31-24 game, and I won't switch back to the Vikings unless I tie it. Can they get the game at least to overtime?




The CPU was able to have Jordan Howard make a nice run, which chewed up some clock. But this is the CPU we're talking about, I'm going to get the ball back.



BOOM! The CPU-led Vikings stabs the dagger into the Eagles with this pass to Greg Olsen, and with no more timeouts, the Eagles are cooked! The Vikings are going to the Super Bowl after being controlled by the CPU about 80% of the game!!

Vikings win 31-24 and advance to the Super Bowl!!

Advanced Stats



I already recapped the game, so I'll go over some players who played well and a few who didn't:

The defensive line kicked butt today and was constantly all over the Eagles. We had a total of 9 hits and both sacks happened in the most critical of times. Hilee Taylor may not have had a game, but he might have single-handedly given Matt Ryan PTSD with the number of hits he laid on him. Even better was the run defense - the Eagles were forced to bench their HB Tre Mason as he fumbled 2 of his first 3 carries. As mostly the Eagles' coach today, I opted to completely abandon the run game and went all-out in the passing game. This strategy failed in the 1st half, but I eventually figured things out in the second half.

This was perhaps the first game of the year where the Vikings' LB corps got chopped up in coverage. Jimmy Graham was the go-to guy until he got injured in the 2nd quarter, and the Vikings' CBs did a good enough job, especially Milliner, preventing the Eagles' top WRs Hilton & Benjamin from doing too much. However, I did eventually pick out SS T. J. McDonald as one who was rather poor in coverage, and I started to use 4th WR Demarcus Robinson, who randomly went nuts against the Vikings' secondary. He might warrant a promotion for the 2021 Eagles, but I'm really getting ahead of myself here.

CB Ahkello Witherspoon also had a poor game, as he couldn't keep up with Robinson. I didn't find many opportunities to torch CB Perrish Cox, which is something the CPU CBs can usually do.

Offensively, I didn't get to play much, but the CPU played very well as Trey Smith. The Eagles did drop a few interceptions, but he consistently found Mike Wallace open. The CPU neglected WR Stefon Diggs, who also dropped his first pass of the year (after dropping like 8 in 2019) and was a non-factor. The running game struggled again, but not close to as much as the Eagles' running game did. When I got control of the 2 drives in the 3rd quarter, I made sure to give Pat White some touches.

The Vikings' O-line also outplayed the Eagles' quite handily. The Eagles only managed 1 sack and 5 QB hits, and Smith usually had enough time to find an open man.

All in all, the CPU basically won this game for the Vikings, though I was able to make it close - but it's clear to all that the Vikings' roster is far superior to the Eagles', and is now ready to claim a Super Bowl.



Injuries:

WR Smith-Schuster is out for the year with a serious spine injury. Also, new kick returner CB Taylor Hart is also out. The good news is that CB Jonathan Banks will return, pushing CB Perrish Cox to the bench.

The Vikings will face the 15-1 #1 Ravens, who were able to barely topple the #2 Chargers. I don't fear them very much since the Eagles rolled over them earlier in the year, but I do hope the CPU can at least try to give me a run for my money.

Wallace is found open down the field, and Smith never relinquishes a chance to fire him a ball when he's open. The Ravens had no answers for Wallace.




The Ravens also thought it smart to put a slow ILB on WR Riley Cooper, and we score the easy TD, going up 7-0.




However, on the next drive, Trey Smith fires a pass to DGB, but CB Bradley Fletcher jumps it and comes away with the pick.




CB Milliner was supposed to take on WR Karl Pittman 1-on-1 here, but Pittman put on the double move and Milliner got roasted alive. Ravens tie it up 7-7.




We retake the lead with a TD pass to Greg Olsen, just #3 of the year for him.




The Ravens got down to the 3 yard line, but they fail on 4th down when QB Cory McNeal has a pass get knocked down by Rodgers-Cromartie.




Howard had a better game today, as he ran through a few big piles.




The Ravens got a big sack on a 3rd down from DE J. J. Watt - they have both Khalil Mack and JJ Watt on the same defense!




SS T. J. McDonald had a good game today, with two big knockdowns in coverage. FS William Moore went down with an injury and McDonald did well to emulate his play.




On another 4th down, McNeal threw a terrible pass out wide and gets picked by Rodgers-Cromartie. DRC returns it to the 9 yard line.




The Vikings' defense was ruthless today, as Shazier smashed this ball out of WR Devin Thomas' hands.




The game got out of hand pretty quickly, and the Vikings claim a 37-10 victory. We did it!!




Make that 44-10, as I ran one last play with 0:01 remaining.

Game Summary

There isn't much to summarize, as the Vikings beat down the Ravens like they were any other CPU-controlled team. The running game was decent, but the Ravens simply had nothing to rush the Vikings with. Smith had all day to tear apart their secondary, and the game was already over by the end of the 1st half. The defense didn't lose a beat when FS William Moore got injured and missed the second half!

So I know you're having a fantastic season... but how are my Cowboys doing? Have to ask haha.

Also, it must take a lot of effort to get some of those advanced stats. Like targets for example. Do you pause and take a note of the target after every pass play or do you do it some other way?

I am not sure if I will post the 2021 season here, but I will send you my franchise to do the numbers for the rookies/new players. You can do both the Vikings and Eagles if you wish.

Oh, and I see I never answered your question about the Cowboys. Let me check the stats...

The 2020 Cowboys finished 6-10, and have been a tire fire for the last decade, as they never have a chance against the Eagles (since I play as them). This year the Cowboys played a 37 year old Vince Young at QB and had a 3245/17/23 line with 54%. 30 year old Toby Gerhart lead the team with 837 yards rushing. They have a strong WR corps in Dez Bryant (91-1046-8) and rookie John Ross (54-808-6). Yes, they actually drafted Bryant; I like it when CPU teams just happen to take players that they also did in real life.

Main problem on offense was a terrible O-line that gave up 55 sacks. Their defense was mediocre, with two guys at 10 sacks (OLB Shane Ray and DE Tanoh Kpassagnon) and two guys at 5 interceptions (ILB Jason Williams, CB Derek Cox).
