Divisional Round Matchups
AFC
(1) Kansas City Chiefs vs. (4) Atlanta Falcons - The Chiefs defeated the Falcons in last year's Wild Card Round and are hoping to duplicate that this year. The Chiefs have the best pass offense and rush defense in the league, which match up perfectly with Atlanta's weaknesses, so the Falcons would really need to shape up to manage an upset at Kansas City Municipal this weekend.
(2) New York Jets vs. (3) Denver Broncos - The Broncos hosted the Jets in Week 9 and it was a close one, but the Jets escaped with a 13-7 victory. This time it's the Jets who are hosting, with a finally healthy Joe Namath who's been in and out of the lineup for the last third of the season. The Jets have a top defense that's capable of slowing down the Broncos great run game, but New York is one of the worst teams in the league in turnover difference, so that could be the reason if Denver happens to keep their playoff run going. Another positive note for Denver is that QB John McCormick is listed as probable for this week, and while Steve Spurrier did admirably last week, McCormick is who got the team here and he is expected to start at Shea Stadium.
NFC
(1) Green Bay Packers vs. (6) San Francisco 49ers - After the Vikings' shocking loss, it's the #1 and #3 teams in the NFC West facing off in the playoffs. The 49ers and Packers split their season series, with the 49ers winning their Week 17 meeting, albeit with Bart Starr resting for this eventual rematch.
(2) Los Angeles Rams vs. (4) Pittsburgh Steelers - The Steelers now have to bounce from their insane overtime wild card win to figuring out how to contain one of the best all-around teams in the league in the Rams. The Steelers will definitely have to tighten up their play, as they also carry one of the worst turnover differences in the league and the Rams have a lot of opportunistic defenders.

Divisional Round
The Falcons are greeted with a light snow in Kansas City, and the home offense thrives, as evidenced by this great Mike Garrett run that puts the Chiefs in the red zone.
Kansas City's other main running back this season, Nick Eddy, is very involved in the passing game, making 2 long TD catches and finishing the day with 124 receiving yards. He is the main piece of the Chiefs entering halftime with a 20-9 lead.
The snow has stopped falling and the Falcons now only have to deal with the cold. And so the tide begins to turn in their favor in the 3rd quarter when Charlie Smith returns a weak Jerrel Wilson punt 75 yards for a touchdown, cutting Kansas City's lead to just 4.
And the floodgates just open up, as Atlanta goes on to score 24 points in the 4th quarter, including this Randy Johnson touchdown pass to John Beasley. Smith, the punt return scorer, contributes with a 54-yard rushing TD as well. The Chiefs crowd is thus stunned into silence as their team will not make their 3rd consecutive Super Bowl appearance. League MVP Len Dawson statistically had a great day, but it was buoyed by his impressive 1st half, whereas his 2nd half was cold as the Falcons defense kept shutting down drives. Notably, the Chiefs were just 3/14 on 3rd downs today, compared to 10/18 conversions for the Falcons. The Falcons become the first of the 1966 expansion teams to make a conference championship.
Final Score: Falcons 40, Chiefs 27.

Divisional Round
Bart Starr sees that Marv Fleming gets past the secondary and hits him for a long TD pass, giving the Packers an early lead. Fleming finishes the game with over 100 yards and 2 touchdowns.
But even with the Packers' early lead, San Francisco gradually chips away at that cushion the whole game and finally takes the lead in the 4th quarter as John Brodie finds Al Dodd in the center of the end zone. And San Fran's other Al, Al Randolph to be precise, intercepts Starr to end the Packers' chance at a last-ditch attempt to survive. And thus, both #1 seeds have been taken down this round. The 49ers return to the NFC Championship Game after last appearing in 1966.
Final Score: 49ers 27, Packers 26.

Divisional Round
The Broncos make the first mark at Shea Stadium, with this pinpoint pass to Max Wettstein in the back of the endzone for a touchdown.
However, the referees today give New York a hand in twice calling end zone pass interference penalties on the Broncos, resulting in New York capitalizing with 2 short Emerson Boozer touchdowns.
The Broncos hope to stay in the game with a timely Abner Haynes kickoff return touchdown in the 4th quarter.
On the Jets' next kickoff, Haynes returns it again but this time gets the polar opposite result of getting rocked by Ralph Baker and putting the football on the ground for the Jets to recover. A couple of plays later, George Sauer climbs the ladder for the touchdown that puts the game away and secures an AFC Championship berth for New York.
Final Score: Jets 27, Broncos 17.

Divisional Round
It's been a huge postseason debut for rookie George Atkinson, with a blocked field goal last week and opening this week's matchup with the Rams by converging with Elijah Nevett to take down punt returner Jim Stiger and forcing him to cough up the ball. Atkinson picks it up and gives Pittsburgh an early lead.
Merlin Olsen is doing his damnedest to keep Los Angeles alive to defend their title, recording this tackle for loss, a fumble recovery that kills a Steelers red zone drive, and 4 total sacks today.
Roy Jefferson has been the primary engine of the Steelers offense in these 2 games, and his final catch, which brings him to 174 yards for the day, is his biggest one as it puts Mike Clark in position to make his 2nd game-winning field goal of this playoff run.
Final Score: Steelers 27, Rams 25.

Upcoming Games
AFC Championship: (2) New York Jets vs. (4) Atlanta Falcons
This is the closest either of these teams have ever come to a championship, although the Jets are being led by veteran coach Weeb Ewbank who does have experience at this level, winning back-to-back championships with the Baltimore Colts a decade ago. The Jets have the advantage of being the home team here, and having one of the top defenses in the league. The Falcons are coming in on the hotter streak though, having won 5 games in a row including coming off the high of taking down perennial juggernaut Kansas City. While the Jets are great in preventing points, they have not been as good with winning the turnover battle, whereas Atlanta is 2nd in the league in that category, so this should be another closely contested playoff game to decide who will be the AFC's second ever representative.
NFC Championship: (4) Pittsburgh Steelers vs. (6) San Francisco 49ers
The two teams to make it out of the Wild Card Round now get to meet in the NFC Championship. The 49ers are hoping to make their first Super Bowl appearance after being denied by the Washington Redskins in '66. As for the Steelers, despite being one of the oldest franchises in the league, this is the closest they've been to a championship game since they were shut out in the Divisional Round in 1947 by their in-state rival Eagles. The Steelers have had quite the miracle run to get this far, having rookie QB Greg Landry take over the team mid-season, Roy Jefferson continually breaking secondaries, special teams bailouts, the works. One of those second half wins was an 18-13 home victory over the 49ers; the Steelers and the Vikings were the only teams to hold San Francisco to 17 points or fewer in a game this season.

1968: Year 3
1968 AFC Championship: NY Jets vs. ATL Falcons
The Jets jump out to a 17-0 lead, but Tommy Tolleson pivots his way into the end zone to put Atlanta on the board just before halftime. Aside from this play, New York is rolling so far in their bid to make a Super Bowl.
However, Atlanta's defense tightens up in the second half, including this clutch takedown by Tommy Nobis at the goal line on 3rd down, keeping the Jets to just a field goal and their lead as just 6 points. Nobis has a monster day in the middle with 14 total tackles, 4 of them for a loss.
In a legendary play, Randy Johnson gets drilled right after getting the pass off, so he was on the ground unaware of Junior Coffey coming down with the pass and scoring a touchdown. With the extra point, Atlanta had a 1-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the game, on the cusp of making their first championship game appearance in just their 3rd year of existence.
Tragedy strikes, as Atlanta's secondary is seemingly caught sleeping, or George Sauer just somehow still had the turbo jets for one last play, but he hauls in a touchdown pass from Joe Namath with mere seconds left in the game to take back the lead. There's no time for Atlanta to respond, and New York snatches victory from the jaws of defeat and earns the right to represent the AFC this year.
Final Score: Jets 31, Falcons 24.

1968: Year 3
1968 NFC Championship: PIT Steelers vs. SF 49ers
The 49ers are the ones to jump out to an early lead, with Bob Harrison picking off Greg Landry and putting the 49ers in position for a Ken Willard touchdown run, and then on the next drive, Willard scores again on a dive to the pylon. That puts San Francisco on top 17-7. Willard is a force in the 1st half, where he records most of his 159 rushing yards.
If there is a playoff MVP, it is certainly Roy Jefferson's honor to lose, as he's been the heart of the Pittsburgh offense through this entire run. He hauls in a long touchdown catch here and finishes with the day with exactly 200 receiving yards.
Defense truly goes out the window in the 4th quarter, as Pittsburgh and San Francisco trade blow after blow. John Brodie throws 4 TD passes in the game, even as he's off balance avoiding Steelers pressure for several of those. But Landry is able to respond with 4 TD passes of his own in this game, including the go-ahead TD pass to Danny Abramowicz threading the needle in the middle of the endzone. That leaves the Niners with a minute to respond.
Brodie immediately hits on a perfect pass over the hands of two Steelers defenders into the arms of tight end Jim Cox. Cox and Kay McFarland both crack the 100-yard mark as receivers. A couple of plays later, Brodie finds fullback Marv Hubbard underneath and he keeps both feet inbounds as the game-winning touchdown is made.
Brodie is ecstatic to have survived this shootout in Pittsburgh and outdueling the rookie upstart Landry. After a decade in the league, Brodie will get his chance to claim a NFL championship.
Final Score: 49ers 48, Steelers 45.
