K Ryan Longwell Cut

Postby Danchat » Mon May 07, 2012 6:45 pm

    The Vikings have cut long-time kicker Ryan Longwell. He is 38 years old and was cut after signing a 4 year, 12 million dollar deal before last season.

The Vikings drafted K Blair Walsh in the draft, but he had an awful season in Georgia last year kicking 21/35 (60%) and only hit 4 kicks over 40 yards.
I'm gonna miss Longwell.....

I believe he said this will be his last year this offseason. Also off the field life got to him to, you know.
Retired from the Fourm. I check back in once a month, sorry in advance for late replies.

This move is truly mind-boggling. Why in the crap would they do something so stupid?

Exactly my logic. Some team will get a minimum deal on him and have a great/average kicker. Blair Walsh will likely be eventually good but was awful in his senior season. Frankly, the Vikings don't think they'll be kicking field goals at all this year. We basically paid him $5 million for one year of average kicking.
He made only 21 of 35 field-goal attempts and missed 10 times from 40 yards or beyond.

That's way worse than Longwell! When the Vikings reach the 35 yard line, we'll be punting!

Amen to the Gano dump.

Why the heck did they sign Rackers? I guess for some competition, I guess, but it seems like a bad idea......

I think it was a kind of a desperation sign. I guess it can't go much worse than the Shayne Graham signing did.

He was cut after our first preseason after he missed field goal attempts from 29 and 49 yards. The 29 yarder was shanked badly left, and the 49 yarder went wide right. He made Gano look like he belonged in the Hall of Fame.
