RevanFan... you get just part of the concepts. Mahomes has an offense of vertical passing and sometimes playing backyard football. In Dallas . They relied on Elliot to keep the defense on their toes. When they call the correct scheme they are more balanced. Look at any successful offenses the will be anywhere from 47% to 50 % run to pass. Just remember many teams use swing passes to their backs as extended running plays. This goes also with jet sweep out of the pistol or shotgun. Analystics are all based on what is call tendencies. This goes back to game planning and scouting. Film study is nothing more that that. What formation is run and play, where on the field, score and time on the clock. All goes into what is played. Now somebody sits in front of a computer and logs plays and all of what I said above . They get a % of probability = analystics. So unless you do and understand how to breakdown films by plays and by positions and grade the players ... you just can not come out and say “ pass to set up the run”. The great Paul Brown did this in the early 50’s and even before that with George Halas. Those two coaches brought more inventionary ideas before computer stats. Everything is based on personnel.. strengths and weaknesses. Do you think teams like Baltimore or Cleveland use the pass to setup the run? Paul Brown started testing his players long before the Wonderlick test.

RevanFan wrote:I don't think the rise of passing has much to do with fans. A bit, sure, but really it's down to data and statistics. Analytics. Passing plays have a much higher expected points per play than running plays, which are often actually negative. The more you run, the fewer points you score. It's statistics, and statistics don't lie. You need to run to keep defenses honest, but every time you do, you are actively limiting your potential to score points. And this is coming from a guy who supported giving Zeke an extension. I like running backs, but the data shows that passing is far better in terms of scoring potential.

This is of course all reliant on the team having a good quarterback, of course. Teams with a Patrick Mahomes or a Dak Prescott, for instance, are far more likely to do well when passing than teams with a Gardner Minshew or Sam Darnold. Additionally, you have to factor in offensive line ability as well. A passing game won't do much with the line giving up constant pressure... but the running game won't do well either in that case. Hopefully in the years ahead we'll see more weighted statistics like you see in baseball analytics.

Honestly, the data shows that the best philosophy is "pass to set up the run", not the other way around.

Well take that data to Derrick Henry, or the Ravens or Browns you'll get laughed at! Or even the Rams 2 seasons ago when they were run first/play-action second under Sean McVay behind Todd Gurly! Team's play to the strength of their personnel, if not they will be losers! Every team can't be pass to set up run. The data you have is biased! Did you watch Army vs. Navy last weekend? Tell them go with that pass to setup run philosophy! You will be escorted out of the building!

RevanFan, BUS36/Coach is giving you the meat, but you're opting to go with a side salad
:P as your staple! When you say pass to set up the run, there's so much more to it than just "having a good QB. Statistics used in media T.V are only an after effect that's makes fan's feel more educated. But they are only fan's who repeat what they heard on T.V.

Have you ever wondered why 98% of all sports journalist/analyst are guys who either didn't play or were just mediocre when they played the sports. Yet they are on T.V and most fans value their opinions! The best guys would talk over fan's understanding and be misunderstood!

1st - In that pass to setup run philosophy, you need to have a OL who's strong suited for pass blocking. 2nd, the WR's need to be quick, not speedy & strong enough to win the CB/WR battle quickly. 3rd Pass to set up run needs RB who can block and be very effective as a pass catcher. Pass to set up run has several philosophies. You got West coast, where in that, the QB doesn't need a strong arm, but is more accurate with short passes. Then you Have Vertical where your QB needs to be more mobile and have a strong arm. With Vertical the OL needs to sustain blocks long enough for A) QB to drop back 7-10 yards. B) WR's win and get down field. And C) TE's and RB to keep LB's honest!

Then there's the Spread philosophy where the offense takes advantage by flooding a single side of the field with more WR's than there are DB's. There are two other hybrid styles to go along with the West Coast, Air Coryell, and Erhardt-Perkins.

As BUS36 mentioned 1977, Mel Blunt rule changed everything about how DB's could check WR's. But from my era and stand point, the moment that changed the way owners and coaches drafted was in 1995 with a guy named Ki jana Carter. The Bengals signed him 1st pick overall to a rookie deal 7 years at $19 million. He was a beast for Penn State. But he got injured on his third carry in his first preseason game. Carter shredded his left ACL and was done for the year and was not a shell of himself there after.

After that, owners drafted QB's more often as No.1 overall.

One other element was that after seasons of no.1 picks turning out to be busts. The owners implemented the rookie salary cap. The 3 yards & a cloud of smoke has be turned into 3-n-out with QB's throwing 40-50 passes per game. That does no mean they have a higher probability of scoring because every pass play won't be a bomb/deep throw. And the way running plays are setup (coach quote me if I'm wrong), if every lineman sustains his block correctly, the run play will break. See Derrick Henry vs the Jaguars last week to further validate my point! Watch NFL highlight reals when analyst pinpoint perfect blocking to spring the RB. In those plays the RB only has to elude one guy, either safety or the CB. Normally the RB wins and the plays go for big gains.

Today's NFL rules are geared to allow the offenses get away with practical murder. John Madden stated during many NFL telecasts, there's offensive holding practically on every down, but the ref's need to see it to call it. Actually, they see it but don't call it! EA Sports included that along with tons of other Madden analysis to bring realism to the video game.

Remember, I have player awareness up to D-1 college, two seasons worth before I was injured! I have family that's played in the NFL and many close friends who also played and coached in the NFL. All we talk is football and how the game has changed/evolved into what it is today! I'm not just a fan!

Okay, this is completely beside the point, but I once went on a first date with someone, and being incredibly nervous and self-conscious, I attempted to avoid looking like a glutton by eating... get this... just a side salad. That was my whole meal.

The date went well overall, but considering she had a big meal herself, I had a lot of regrets with my order haha.

And there is you biggest problem... nerves.. if you are worried about what you are going to do..then you have failed.. simple as that. if you have the confidence to take someone out ..that confidence has to stay or you will be look as weak. Just like in football if your worried of getting hurt or making mistakes ..well you just did. I never stood on a field thinking I was going to to lose.

In fact My first play in my first Semi Pro game was against the last cut of the NY Giants who played LG. He stood 6-4 295 lbs while I am 6-0 255lb. My first though was " if I am going to die out here, well someone is coming with me" I beat the guy off the ball and nailed the RB for a loss in the backfield. Later he started scratching and poking me in the eye..I fixed him but headbutting his chest and kicking my head up ..splitting his chin almost ear to ear..he left the game and never returned. His replacement tried the same ..well he got the same treatment from me. two LGs down and I am still standing. My stats were ..3 games, 1 start, 7 total tackles (4 solos-3 assists) 1 sack..playing 3i position. Oh yes after blowing my knee out in HS and told never to play again..I think I did pretty dam good.

So if you are going to do anything do it with confidence of success.

And to give my analysis of what I mean by the game being geared toward fans, here goes! In the past the NFL was a manly man's sport. Football is a 10 yard fight! It wasn't pass, every down because defenses were built to knock your head off, trying to stop you from getting that 10th yard every time out! There was no bend don't break defensive philosophy back then. And the rules allowed defenses to be vicious. It was ground N pound your way down the field. And on the other side of the ball, defenses were geared to break the will of the offensive players, intimidation was key! Defenses were built to be bullies! Most teams only passed on third down if it was considered 3rd N long! otherwise they ran the ball! That style of play in it's violent nature was not appealing and was boring to the non-enthusiast.

Women & children were not a targeted fan base! The only women that were close to the game were the cheerleaders of the teams & the wives of the players. Very few women attended the games except if with the family. Fast forward to today. Because the forward pass is more exciting than the 4 yard gain, and the league wants TV ratings and money, they've modified the game to appeal to dam near everyone! So the RB became less a focal point and the throwing QB rules the day, regardless of how bad he is! Thus Ben R. gets to throw 50+ passes almost daily win or lose!

Every stadium has gourmet chefs, activities for the kids, bar's and all the comforts to make the women feel very at home away from home with the kids!

The last game I went to, as we got out of the vehicle, there were groups of women tailgating with no men around trash talking about their favorite players, in groups at the bar enjoying cocktails and appetizers while watching the game, getting their flirt on & having a great time! Now you have women trainers, sports casters, coaches, referees, etc. That attracts everyone's attention to tune in or go to the stadium for a live look in!

Now, if you go to a NFL game, women are all over the stadium, participating in the game at various levels, enjoying the game, learning and understanding the game and watching the guys! Going to an NFL game is a great place to meet women! ;)

NFL is rated "E" for Everyone and has expanded it's viewership tremendously!!

Who is this team wearing Black & Gold? I was shocked to see the Steelers go down in flames vs the Bengals! I was sure that it would be a bounce-back game where the Steelers found their groove! Boy was I wrong! It seemed to be the Steelers are not playing with the fire or confidence they had during the 11-0 stretch! Are they tired and out of gas? Playing vs the Colts, then the Browns will be tough games and the North title is up for grabs! Loosing to the 2-10-1 team is totally disappointing!
