Does anyone know how to edit plyrface.dat files?

Does anyone know how to edit the faces in the plyrface.dat file? I was hoping to use a graphics program to edit a face and then import that file back into the plyrface.dat file so that the edited face would show up in the game. I've seen old links for this topic, but most of them are missing or incomplete.
